This special prismatic compass is made of brass with an antique black gunmetal coating. There is a viewing slot window on top cover that allows the viewer to see the circular magnetic compass floating card, which is coloured bright green. This green compass card has the makers name ELLIOT BROS, STRAND LONDON. The prism on the side allows the viewer to also take bearings when using the tall folding point sight.
Stamped on the base are the marking ELLIOT BROS. LONDON.
The compass beautifully fits into its original leather case.
Considering its 135 years old the compass and its case have survived in remarkably good condition

The compass is based on the prismatic compass by Charles Schmalcalder (British patent in 1812), which lets the user read the card while sighting a distant object. It was termed an Improved Hutchinson Prismatic Compass, said to be lighter and less bulky ‘than the old form’ and was adopted by the various branches of the British and Foreign Services.
