J W HADLEY in Melbourne was Australia's largest specialist watch case maker
Established in Victoria St Abbotsford in the mid 1920's they moved from the corner of Church St to 655 Victoria St in 1929 into a new purpose built factory.
The machinery was subsequently purchased and contacts obtained to produce cases for brands such as Rolex.
In 1929 100 staff were engaged in watch case manufacture.
J W Handley went on until the 1960’s and made a great variety of products- during WWII they produced such things as compasses and gun sights for the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).
They eventually ceased production in the 1960’s

This smaller model of Prismatic compass was issued to the RAAF Royal Australian Airforce Officer's in the 2nd World War. Please remember it's an original item from 1941 so 84 years old.

The dial is made from mother of pearl, and has a glow to read the markings on the dial in the dark.
When looking through the prismatic viewfinder, two readings can be observed: 0-180°, and 180-360°.

It's called a prismatic compass because of the right-angled prism that folds over the compass. When the eye is brought close to the prism the readings can be taken while sighting the point of observation. The prism's height can be adjusted for sharper readings of the scale on the compass card. The glass above the compass has a scale that can be adjusted with a screw on the side. The cover has a round sighting glass window with a dividing line. The prismatic compass was an indispensable instrument for officers in the British Military. It is also extremely popular for walking, trekking, explorers & other outdoor activities. There is no liquid in the compass , its dry damping. There is a small arm that automatically locks the compass dial when it's shut.
These compasses are superb gifts for a special person because they are the best that money can buy.
